Certum: Big Company Results with PTC Solutions

More than 20 years ago, Nico Marini, a newly graduated engineer in Hasselt, found himself working for a company that manufactured buses—luxury touring coaches, public transit vehicles, and such. He loved all things automotive, and within a few years the company named him head of engineering.

But despite his passion, he didn’t aspire to climb that corporate ladder. Instead, he dreamed of forming his own firm, one that stressed technology and ingenuity. One that was forward thinking and progressive.

He soaked up all the knowledge he could for the next few years, and then, in 2005, he launched Certum Engineering — an automotive engineering company specializing in every part of the vehicle: light weight vehicle structures, engine mounts, and exhaust systems.

Starting a business in this field is bold. The automotive industry is vast, and the competition dogged. Nonetheless, customers responded well to Certum’s innovative service and designs, and the small company grew.

But how long could they keep it up? Nico Marini had been in the industry long enough to know that, to remain competitive, you always have to keep costs moving down, while pushing quality ever higher.

So he began to ask what more technology could do for his company. Of course, his engineers already used 3D CAD for all their design work: however, whilst they were happy with their solution at the time, they knew they were working within its limits. That’s why they turned to CadCorner, an authorized PTC Reseller, to help them migrate to PTC Creo and PTC Windchill.

The PTC partner suggested two key PTC packages: PTC Creo Essentials and PTC Windchill PDM Essentials.  In addition to these, Certum also deployed PTC Creo Advanced Assembly Extension (AAX), PTC Creo Advanced Framework Extension (AFX) and PTC Creo Mechanism Dynamics Option (MDO).

The PTC Creo Essentials bundle contains PTC Creo Parametric and the PTC Creo Flexible Modeling Extension. With these additional seats and extensions, designers get all the benefits of a powerful parametric modeler and the agility of a direct modeler.

With PTC Windchill PDM Essentials, the team now has a full-blown data management system—without having had to disrupt the team with lengthy deployment processes.

PTC Windchill PDM Essentials is key for any small manufacturing or design company that wants to get big company results without spending enterprise-sized resources. With the software, Certum gets the major benefits of a data management system—design and other files relevant to the products are organized, secure, and easy to find and reuse. It even includes workflow capabilities, so files are routed as needed, for example when an engineering change order arises and must proceed through various approval steps.

However, unlike enterprise installations, most of the system is preconfigured. That means it’s quick to install and start using.

The investment paid off. “Time is of the essence when putting together a design,” says Marini. “By using PTC Creo software, we have achieved a time-gain of 25%.”

Today, data flows seamlessly within the company as engineers share and leverage data without fear of working on the wrong version of a file or, worse, overwriting someone else’s work!

Certum Engineering uses PTC solutions to ensure fewer errors, fewer failures, and a team well-positioned for another 10 years of building tomorrow’s cars and buses.
