Did You Know? Link PTC Mathcad Prime 3.1 Output to PTC Creo Parametric

With the release of PTC Creo Parametric 3.0 M030 , we enhanced the integration with PTC  Mathcad Prime 3.1 so that you can embed a PTC Mathcad worksheet directly in the CAD model. There are several benefits.

  • The PTC Mathcad worksheet, and thus any relevant engineering calculation, goes where the model goes; it’s saved in the same file.
  • Parameters from PTC Creo can be used to drive engineering calculations. Change your geometry, and the worksheet reflects and re-calculates using the new values.
  • PTC Mathcad can also drive parameters to update the CAD model.

In this post, we look closer at that last item, driving parameters in the CAD model. There are  three steps to linking PTC Mathcad to a PTC Creo Parametric model and using your worksheet calculations to automatically set the parameters in your model geometry.

  1. Embed a PTC Mathcad Worksheet. Once you’ve upgraded to PTC Creo 3.0 M030 and PTC Mathcad Prime 3.1, you’ll see the PTC Mathcad icon on the ribbon interface under the Applications tab. To embed a worksheet, just open an assembly in PTC Creo and then click Applications >  PTC Mathcad >  Insert Worksheet.
  1. Designate output regions in the PTC Mathcad Worksheet. Now you can create the calculations that you want to drive your geometry. You’ll see a sophisticated example below, but any elaborate relation you set up in PTC Creo is a candidate for your worksheet. You’ll select regions, give them a name, and then save and push the results to PTC Creo Parametric.

  1. Create new relations in PTC Creo Parametric. With output regions defined, you can create relations in PTC Creo Parametric Relations dialog box.

PTC University has an online tutorial to show you how it works. An instructor takes you through the steps demonstrating how to designate output regions in a PTC Mathcad worksheet, and then create the necessary relations in PTC Creo Parametric.

For a more complete education on linking PTC Mathcad Prime 3.1 with PTC Creo Parametric, you can find an excellent tutorial here. It includes all the steps you need to embed the worksheet, link input regions (that is, let your geometry determine the values in your worksheet), push results to PTC Creo (that is, use worksheets to drive the geometry), and more.
