Tontec: Mold Design Giant Saves with PTC Creo Upgrade

For large enterprises, even the slightest improvement in efficiency makes a huge financial difference. Take Tontec International. The company’s 4300 employees produce more than 1500 molds a year and operate 330+ injection molding machines.

Orders come from customers everywhere—Schneider Electric, Bosch, Toshiba, and many more.  To handle the massive workload, the company has plants spread across eastern China—all big and busy places.

Tontec operates across four sites in China

The Tontec team used to design its molds using Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire and managed its enormous vault of design data with PTC Windchill PDMLink. But with the introduction of PTC Creo, management began to ask whether the company would benefit from an upgrade.

Despite all the new capabilities in the new PTC Creo, Tontec managers and designers needed to know that PTC solutions would make a difference to their bottom line before investing time and money.

Tontec offers all types of injection molding processes, including Multi-Material Molding

After some research and discussion, they decided to make the switch.  Here’s why:

PTC Creo makes available tools like the new PTC Creo Mold Analysis Extension, which engineers can use to quickly and accurately simulate the injection molding of plastic parts within PTC Creo Parametric. Designers use the tool to find and fix potential problems, optimize designs, and improve the manufacturability of products.

The team also adopted PTC Creo Flexible Modeling Extension (FMX), an add-on that brings direct modeling convenience to PTC Creo Parametric. Now, designers can edit existing design data and third-party data quickly, without concern for design intent. So when late changes come along, productivity and deadlines don’t have to slip.

“In the recent version of PTC Creo, we see significant improvements in terms of enhanced capabilities which have helped us to improve our mold design efficiency,” says Shen yang Liao, mold design department manager.

The upgrade at Tontec also provided opportunities for better collaboration. Not only did the company upgrade its installation of PTC Windchill PDMLink to the latest release, it also began using PTC Creo View Lite.  A browser plug-in, PTC Creo View Lite is a tool that’s integrated into PTC Windchill so that marketing, sales, and anybody else can instantly see and evaluate product models—even when it comes from different CAD systems. That’s going to be especially useful as Tontec pushes into automotive markets.

To ensure all these software changes met with success at Tontec, the company invested in user training. “Using a PTC University consultant, we delivered informative training to the team, which resulted in faster adoption,” says Mr. Liao.

Tontec reports that it has indeed seen more collaboration among its departments and partners since switching to PTC Creo. Best of all, mold design efficiency has improved 15%, and rework is down 30%!
