Apply Custom View Styles to Your Designs
7 Mar, 2011 By: Russell BrookOn the Edge Solid Edge Tutorial: Set up your display with view styles, and change among them quickly.
Editor's Note: This tutorial courtesy of Siemens PLM Software.
One of the benefits of modeling in Solid Edge is that you can use images of your virtual 3D designs in brochures, company web site manuals, and more, but setting up your display each time can become tiresome. Here's a tip to show you how to save your view styles and quickly change between them.
Select the Styles command from the View tab on the Command ribbon.
From the top combo box in the Style dialog, change the option to 3D View Styles.
Create a New style (using the button shown highlighted above). This can be based on an existing style or default settings, which can save some time. I'll call mine My New 3D face style, but you're free to call yours anything you like that describes the face style.
The Rendering tab allows you to set view perspective, anti-aliasing, render mode, textures, reflections, and more. (Note: the options are context-sensitive.) I'll use some perspective, bump up anti-aliasing, and choose smooth shaded render mode. I'll also turn off drop shadows, keep reflections, and add textures.
The Lights tab allows you to change lighting properties. I'll choose a light and add a red tint to warm up the lights from this direction.
The Background tab allows you to set a single color, use a gradient blend, or add an image as a backdrop. I'll go with the defaults, because I'll use the reflection box to add more realism later.
The reflection box tab allows you to set up a scene that is reflected from your model surfaces if reflections were enabled earlier. I'll use one of the supplied files. After opening, it the dialogue fills with a preview; I'll also choose to use it for the background. Clicking OK saves the view style.
The images are reflected from the model. Top Tip: the reflection boxes are found in the "C:\Program Files\Solid Edge ST3\Images\Environments\Reflection_boxes" directory.

View styles are displayed in the View Style Set pull-down menu, so you can quickly swap between view styles. Save these to your template to guarantee all your images use the same style!
