Shortest Route to a 3D Throw Pillow

As use of Autodesk Revit increases, so does the demand for stock imagery, called entourage, to add detail to architectural presentations.

By Michele Bousquet

When Autodesk released Revit Architecture as a BIM solution for the masses, no one would have guessed that its throw pillows would get so much attention. Thanks to the inclusion of the mental ray renderer in Autodesk Revit 2010, what's rocking the worlds of architects and designers these days is the ability to add items such as chairs, lamps, pillows, and vases to their presentations.

Called "entourage," these elements, which include everything from people and cars to flowers and furniture, can be used to "place a building in the context of its environment and relate it to human scale." So says author and digital visualization expert Scott Onstott, who reports that the term originally was used in relation to traditional architectural illustration.

"Entourage adds realism and scale to a scene," says Strachan Forgan, an award-winning San Francisco architect and director of digital design at Sasaki Associates. "Entourage can transform a space into a place, and a house into a home."

Although such visual enhancements have been long been used in architectural renderings, the ease of adding entourage content to Revit designs is taking the process to a new level. Read more »

Bentley Adds Three Product Firsts to OpenPlant Line

OpenPlant Modeler V8i, OpenPlant ModelServer V8i, and OpenPlant Isometrics Manager V8i achieve interoperability requirements of iRING user community.

By Cadalyst Staff

In mid-August, Bentley Systems announced the availability of three new products in its OpenPlant software line for plant creation based on an open data model. The company reports that the new plant offerings are the first commercially available products to share and meet the primary goal of the iRING user community — that is, to enable real-time sharing and interoperability of data and information across different organizations and systems using an internationally recognized standard. iRING (ISO 15926 Real-Time Interoperable Network Grids) implementations address the challenging workflow requirements of globally distributed and sourced plant projects. The new plant applications enhance interoperability across data formats, workflows, and plant design systems, and extend the integration of Bentley OpenPlant across multiple infrastructure disciplines.

Regarding the new OpenPlant products, Bruce Strupp, CPE-design technology director for CH2M HILL, a provider of consulting, program management, design, construction, and operations solutions, said, "CH2M HILL has been an active member and participant in both FIATECH and, more recently, the iRING community of users. We're committed to the goals of these organizations to achieve true interoperability and deliver business value through ISO 15926, and are delighted to see Bentley standing up to meet these challenges. The capabilities being delivered by Bentley with these new products are what the iRING community has been waiting for." Read more »
