This Week's Software Tips
Quickly Hide the Ribbon Using a Custom Keyboard Shortcut
CAD manager Richard Alexander shows us how to customize keyboard shortcuts in AutoCAD. "I like to quickly capture the space that the ribbon takes up, so I developed a keyboard shortcut. I chose Ctrl+3, but you can choose your own combination of keys. To create the shortcut, use the CUI command, scroll down to Keyboard Shortcuts, and then to Shortcut Keys." Change Initial Setup Profiles in AutoCAD 2010
Frequent tipster Leonid Nemirovsky shares a tip on creating new Initial Setup workspaces in AutoCAD 2010. "If for some reason Initial Setup (a new feature in 2010) is not the one you need for a particular job (for example, it was set as Civil and you need Structural settings), then open the Options window (any way you prefer), browse to the User Preferences tab, and select the Initial Setup button at the bottom left corner of the dialog box." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Find the Volume of an Object
Leonid Nemirovsky also discusses Measuregeom, a tool that allows you to take volume and other measurements of your line work or object. "Type Measuregeom at the Command prompt and a very handy measuring tool is at your disposal. Select the type of data you want to find, and follow the onscreen instructions." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Shortcuts to Windows Explorer Folders
Steven LaKose gives us two small LISP routines that will automatically open to very important Windows Explorer folders from inside AutoCAD. "To use these routines, load them and then type ECD (Explore Current Directory) or EASD (Explore Automatic Save Directory) to start the commands. ECD is very handy when you are nested multiple levels deep and need an Explorer window to view the current folder." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
And More Tips!
Following are this week's reminders, tidbits, and miscellaneous updates from the Cadalyst Tip Patrol.
Underlaying PDFs in AutoCAD 2010: In addition to referencing/underlaying xrefs, raster, DGN, and DWF files, AutoCAD 2010 can underlay PDF files. Attached/underlayed PDF files can be faded or clipped, and Snap to Underlays can be turned on. Look in the ribbon under the Insert tab.
- Submit only code and other tips that are your original work (or provide the original source so we can include proper credit).
- Tell us which software version you use.
