This Week's Software Tips
Call for Tips: 3D Modeling, Rendering, and Animation
You don't hear a lot about the 3D capabilities of AutoCAD that have been around for years. Let's change that and get the word out about how to make the most of 3D AutoCAD. Send us your favorite tips related to 3D modeling, rendering, and animation. If we publish your tip, you'll receive a Cadalyst T-shirt, and you'll be entered in a random monthly drawing for $100. Submit your tip soon!
Add Company Standards to the UI
Interior designer Denise Couture Cowell tells us how she streamlined and standardized her company's AutoCAD user interface. Custom pulldowns are a good way to get all of your users working on the same page. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Specify Relative Paths
Frequent tipster Leonid Nemirovsky details a method he uses to help maintain the paths of referenced files, and he also describes a script file he has created that helps him to repath files from outside sources. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Edit Revision Clouds
Ed Hall sends us a tip on editing revision clouds. "I often need to add more items to a revision cloud than originally planned. Instead of making a new revision cloud to encompass all the items, I will draw a second revision cloud so that it overlaps the first one." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Export CAD Drawings to Word
Brad Hofman sends us a tip on capturing linework from AutoCAD drawings and pasting it into a Microsoft Word file. "Print the DWG layout to PDF. Copy the desired information in the PDF to the clipboard. Paste the DWG/PDF information from the clipboard to Word." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Establish a Relative Origin
In this brief video, CAD Specialist Mark Mason demonstrates how to create a relative origin to place an element. "This is a faster way than building construction geometry and having to hide or delete it. It also helps those users who don't have the exact coordinates. It is one of those hidden features in AutoCAD that's been there for a while, but not too many people know about it." View the video tip.
ProjectWise Tip: Xrefs, Sheet Sets, and More
Viktor Ceka sends us this tip for users of ProjectWise from Bentley Systems. "Here is a sheet sets tip for people using ProjectWise: select all your cut sheets into ProjectWise> find folder ID> right click> copy out. Select folder ID into your hard drive> create a sheet set." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
- Submit only code and other tips that are your original work (or provide the original source so we can include proper credit).
- Tell us which software version you use.
