This Week's Software Tips

Align 3D Objects
Don Morgan II shares with us his method of creating reference lines to align 3D objects in AutoCAD. "My favorite and most-used tip for working in 3D AutoCAD is using a linear dimension as a reference when moving solids around." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Create 2D Views from 3D Models
Ian Whistler, a piping drafter, sends us a tip on using the Flatshot command to generate orthogonal views from 3D objects. "Flatshot is a command that I use quite often to generate ortho views from models. It creates 2D linework from all of the 3D objects shown in the current view." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Protect Complex 3D Files
Civil technician Michael D. Ishman sends us a tip that will help you maintain your files and improve your startup time when working with 3D renderings. "Working in three dimensions can be very taxing on your computer. Even the biggest and best computers can get overburdened, especially when you are rendering models." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Use PressPull to Extrude an Area
Cadalyst columnist Bill Fane shares a few tips on extruding faces of 3D objects. "Contrary to popular opinion, it is not necessary to create a single, contiguous object such as a pline or spline to serve as the boundary for an extrusion." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Simplify When Animating
Wray Scott recommends that we simplify our drawings' background details during animations. "When creating animation, it is not always advantageous to have a complicated background, because it will increase the file size and rendering time. This is a time to heed the saying 'Less is more.'" View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Submit Your Tip

Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. If we publish your tip, we'll send you a Cadalyst T-shirt, and each month Cadalyst editors will randomly select one published tip and send a $100 gift card to its author. Please remember:

  • Submit only code and other tips that are your original work (or provide the original source so we can include proper credit).
  • Tell us which software version you use.

By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your code in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to the code; published code is not to be used for commercial purposes.
