This Week's Software Tips

Transfer Content with Windows Clipboard
Frequent tipster Leonid Nemirovsky passes along a tip about using the Windows XP clipboard manager to get data. "In the Windows (we use XP service pack 3) Start menu, click on Run. In the field that appears, type CLIPBRD.EXE." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Copy Text Data into AutoCAD
Michael Viscetto shares with us his method of getting data from a third-party program and putting it into AutoCAD as text. "With both AutoCAD and the Word document open, highlight the verbiage of the document with the mouse, then right-click, Copy, and go to AutoCAD to paste it with a right-click." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Navigate to Folder Locations
Senior Engineering Designer Perry Medina has some suggestions for browsing to drawings that are buried deep in folders on a company network. "When you go to open it in AutoCAD, you can paste the copied address into the File Name box, press Enter (or click the Open button), and it will take you directly to that folder, where you can select the file you want!" View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Fix Image Aspect Ratio
Cadalyst contributing author (and close friend of Captain LearnCurve) Bill Fane provided us a with a way to insert raster image files whose aspect ratios are out of sync. "Problem: You want to insert a raster image into a drawing, perhaps to trace over it with AutoCAD lines, circles, arcs, etc., but the aspect (width to height) ratio of the raster image isn't correct." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Submit Your Tip

Review Cadalyst's Tip Submission Guidelines, then Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Please remember to submit only code and other tips that are your original work (or provide the original source so we can include proper credit) and to tell us which software version you use.

By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your code in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to the code; published code is not to be used for commercial purposes.
