Tips for Everything Except the Turkey
Do you have any tips for using AutoCAD — or any other CAD software tool — more effectively and efficiently? Send them to us! If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Use the "Submit Tip" button below to send us your tip today!
Detach All Xrefs
Frequent tipster Leonid Nemirovsky sends us a command sequence to quickly detach all referenced files in AutoCAD. "Why waste time with dialog boxes? This series of keystrokes uses the Command line instead of a window," says tip tester Brian Benton. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Oops — I Did It Again!
Designer Chris Micallef discusses the Oops command and how it differs from the Undo command. "I don't use the command very often, but occasionally I have erased something and continued working only to realize that the deleted geometry is still required or was erased by mistake." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
X, Y, Z Filters
Marcel Aubin has been using AutoCAD since release 1.4 and wants to share with us a tip that he finds very useful. According to tip tester Brian Benton, "This is a great tip that can help you draw more accurately. You can use these filters to find intersects of lines, to make an object co-linear, or to help when drawing in 3D." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Calculate Offsets for Centering
Tipster Ed Galicki shares a command macro that he uses in AutoCAD Mechanical Desktop that helps him calculate centering distances for stacked plates. "This gives the distance to constrain the edge away from the edge of the second part, without requiring annoying calculating." View the follow-up comments and photos.
Research Report Explains Cloud Computing
Aruvian's R'search, a consulting and research organization, has released a guide to cloud computing. The Analyzing Cloud Computing research report explains the history of cloud computing; its architecture, application programming interfaces, and cost logic; and the advantages and disadvantages involved. Also addressed are the market for cloud computing, regulations impacting it, and delivery and deployment models.
