Tips & Tools Weekly (Vol. 16, No. 12)
4 Apr, 2011 By: Cadalyst StaffThis Week's Software Tips
What's Your Secret?
Do you have any tips for using AutoCAD — or any other CAD software tool — more effectively and efficiently? Send them to us! If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Use the "Submit Tip" button below to send us your tip today!
Click to Scroll
Ian A. White sends us a tip on using the AutoCAD scroll bars more efficiently — even instantly. Tip reviewer Brian Benton noted, "I usually turn off my scroll bars to increase the size of my drawing area, but instant navigation is very appealing." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Name Your View
Tipster Kent Elrod sent us a tip describing the potential power and uses of the View command in AutoCAD. "I have been using the View command more often recently, and it made me wonder if newer users were trained on this and are making use of it. There is a lot to the command now." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Identify Layer
Tipster Sam Lucido sends us a LISP routine he made for AutoCAD to instantly display the current layer of any selected object. "Have you ever wanted to pick an object and have a dialog box pop up to tell you the layer? What-Layer.lsp does just that." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Shorten Your DimEdit
CAD-tip guru Leonid Nemirovsky sends us a small tip that can save you time by reducing keystrokes when editing dimensions in AutoCAD. "If you want to edit the string of text in your dimension, then yes, absolutely use ED ... for this purpose, there is no quicker method," said tip reviewer Brian Benton. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Review Cadalyst's Tip Submission Guidelines, then Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Please remember to submit only code and other tips that are your original work (or provide the original source so we can include proper credit) and to tell us which software version you use.
By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your code in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to the code; published code is not to be used for commercial purposes.
