This Week's Software Tips

Reuse and Recycle Old Tips
Is there a classic tip that you're still using today? Use the "Submit Tip" button below to tell us about your favorites from the past — like "Trade Values" below — so we can tell your fellow CAD users how wonderful they are!

Change Attributes Globally with GATTE
Tipster Danny Korem sends us a tip he first gave to a client of his that needed to globally change attributes in AutoCAD files. "Though it's not a young piece of code, it's friendly and you won't be prompted to type attribute tag names or values — just to select." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Paste as a Named Block
Frequent tipster Leonid Nemirovsky sends us a keyboard shortcut that lets users paste copied objects as a block, with a name assigned by AutoCAD. "I use Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V very often in one drawing or between drawings, but I never noticed this trick before." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Get a Better Grip
Prolific tipster that he is, Leonid also shares a second tip this week; this one's about using grips in AutoCAD. "Highlight an object to activate the grips, make one of the grips 'hot' by clicking it, press Enter, and move your mouse. That will start moving the object." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Classic Tip: Trade Values
Tip Number 1507, "Trade Values," recently caught the eye of Cadalyst tip reviewer Brian Benton. "Leland Leahy gave us this LISP routine way back in March of 1999! It switches the actual text between two text objects. It doesn't work so well on multiline text, but works great on single-line text." Give this classic tip another look!

Submit Your Tip

Review Cadalyst's Tip Submission Guidelines, then Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Please remember to submit only code and other tips that are your original work (or provide the original source so we can include proper credit) and to tell us which software version you use.

By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your code in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to the code; published code is not to be used for commercial purposes.

Tips & Tools Weekly software tips for AutoCAD are reviewed by Cadalyst staff and the Tip Patrol before publication. Use all tips at your own discretion, please. We're sorry, but editors and Tip Patrol members cannot provide assistance with technical problems; please refer to Cadalyst's Hot Tip Harry-Help discussion forum for assistance with AutoLISP and other AutoCAD customization questions.

Sincere thanks to our volunteer Tip Patrol members: Brian Benton, Don Boyer,
