This Week's Software Tips
One Good Deed Deserves Another
Do you have any tips for using AutoCAD — or any other CAD software tool — more effectively and efficiently? Send them to us! If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Use the "Submit Tip" button below to send us your tip today!
Start MS Word from AutoCAD
Civil designer Sam Lucido provides us with a way to open other programs, such as Microsoft Word, from inside AutoCAD. "Have you ever wanted to start Microsoft Word or Excel from AutoCAD? A simple and effective way to do this is by using the Alias Editor." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Prevent Text Mirroring
Mary E. Kipp sends us a tip about a text setting in AutoCAD that will enable you to mirror objects without mirroring their text — or to flip the text backward, if you choose. "Simply type in MirrText at the Command line, then change the setting so that the text will not be mirrored along with the object." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Inventor Tip: Turn Off Parts in Views without Using View Representations
CAD designer David Gaskill shared an Autodesk Inventor tip that can be used with all versions of the software. Thanks to Jeffrey Rowe, principal consultant of Cairowest Group, for reviewing this tip for Cadalyst readers. "Have you ever wanted to turn off the display of parts in a view without having to set up a new level of detail or view representation, only to find out that the parts' visibility is grayed out?" View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Following are this week's reminders, tidbits, and miscellaneous updates from the Cadalyst Tip Patrol.
Tip guru Leonid Nemirovsky of the Better Than Nothing AutoLISP site shared this reminder with readers: "Some AutoCAD users are still trying to abbreviate the Zoom Extents command to ZE with LISP routines, or adding it to the PGP file. The truth is, Autodesk resolved this a long time ago. All you need to do is double-click the scroll wheel button of your mouse. The same goes for Pan: just press and hold the wheel button and move your mouse."
