This Week's Software Tips

Help Out with a Really Harry Situation
When it comes to CAD code, Hot Tip Harry knows a good tip when he sees it — but he'll only see them if you send them in! Use the "Submit Tip" button below to send us your LISP routines. If we publish your tip, you'll earn a $25 gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store.

Use a Circle as a Cutting Plane
Doug Ramstad, a CADD technician and drafter, shares a tip for using an object with specific visual styles to hide 3D linework in an AutoCAD viewport. "This is a cool tip if you need to make a drawing that only displays solid construction lines in your view, and it's simple enough to do," said tip reviewer Brian Benton. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Save Screen Captures
Engineering technician Hayden Clarke shares a tip about an AutoCAD command that will save your current view as an image file. "The SaveImg command saves a quick screen capture of your current AutoCAD display, and prompts you for a file type, file name, and the quality you desire." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

VPRotateAssoc
Frequent tipster Danny Korem explains an AutoCAD system variable that controls what happens to a viewport's contents when the viewport is rotated. "Sometimes, while organizing sheets, you need to rotate viewports within drawings. If the viewport keeps its actual orientation when rotated, check the VPRotateAssoc variable." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Constrain a Block's Position
Frequent tipster Leonid Nemirovsky sends us an AutoCAD tip for using the Geometric Constraint command in an unusual way. "I use GeomConstraint to align blocks to construction lines in a drawing, or to align blocks to part of a drawing." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Submit Your Tip

Review Cadalyst's Tip Submission Guidelines, then Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Please remember to submit only code and other tips that are your original work (or provide the original source so we can include proper credit) and to tell us which software version you use.

By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your code in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to the code; published code is not to be used for commercial purposes.

Got Feedback? To share feedback about one of today's tips, navigate to the tip using the link provided above, then click Comment. The Comment tool is available to registered users of Cadalyst's CAD Tips site.

Tips & Tools Weekly software tips for AutoCAD are reviewed by Cadalyst staff and the Tip Patrol before publication. Use all tips at your own discretion, please. We're sorry, but editors and Tip Patrol members cannot provide assistance with technical problems; please refer to Cadalyst's Hot Tip Harry-Help discussion forum for assistance with AutoLISP and other AutoCAD customization questions.

Sincere thanks to our volunteer Tip Patrol members: Brian Benton, Don Boyer,
Mitchell Hirschklau, R.K. McSwain, and Billy Wooten.

Design Master Releases Results of MEP 3D-BIM Survey
Engineering software provider Design Master Software has conducted an online survey of MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) engineers and designers to learn about their experiences using building information modeling (BIM). Survey results indicated that the number of projects modeled in 3D for collision detection has not changed in the past year, and when a project is modeled in 3D, more of the various disciplines are included in the model.
