This Week's Software Tips
Do You Have any Hot Leads for Harry?
When it comes to CAD code, Hot Tip Harry knows a good tip when he sees it! Use the "Submit Tip" button below to send us your LISP routines. If we publish your tip, you'll earn a $25 gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store.
Dimension in 3D
Kent Elrod has created a visual guide to dimensioning 3D objects in AutoCAD's model space environment. "People new to 3D in AutoCAD often have a hard time adding dimensions to the model in model space; the dimensions either end up on the wrong plane or the dimtext is not shown in the right direction. I have developed a PDF cheat sheet that covers the basics for getting the dimensions placed for 3D modeling correctly every time." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
From Ribbon to Toolbar
Bob Crooker shares a method for using AutoCAD ribbon panels as toolbars. "I stumbled on this by accident: You can detach individual tool panels from the ribbon to keep them in view." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Angelina Roskam, a CADD technician, shares a tip that can help you manage AutoCAD's wipeout objects. "I used to hate wipeouts — that is, until I learned about the frames settings," said tip reviewer Brian Benton. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Trim Your Hatch
Tipster Eric Lawson has some suggestions for longtime AutoCAD users who have difficulty keeping up with the changes from one release to the next. "First, read the Tips & Tools Weekly newsletter, particularly if you're one of those operators who work on their own. I find when working with a group, there is always an exchange of information, but when working solo, the only other way to keep up with the changes is to read the instructions; how boring." Inventor Tip: Add Model Dimensions to 2D Drawings
Cadalyst contributing editor Bill Fane reviewed this tip from CADD designer David Gaskill that will help you add dimensions to Autodesk Inventor drawings. "Have you ever wanted to add dimensions to your Inventor drawings, knowing that you already dimensioned the model? It would be nice to leverage the dimensions from your model sketches." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
