This Week's Software Tips
Get Your Name on the 'Nice' List
Do you have any tips for using AutoCAD — or any other CAD software tool — more effectively and efficiently? Send them to us! If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Use the "Submit Tip" button below to send us your tip today!
Clean Up Files before Saving
Rosie Balusek, a drafting supervisor, used the Action Recorder in AutoCAD to save a series of commands to clean up files before saving them. "Before saving each drawing, we run the Purge and Audit commands (plus a LISP routine to eliminate ghost text). I use the Action Recorder to save all the commands used before saving." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Macro: Turn On and Thaw All Layers
Tipster Daniel Jurado created a macro to tidy up AutoCAD Civil 3D and AutoCAD Map files, but his tip should work in all versions of AutoCAD. "The macro thaws all layers, turns on all layers, sets the current layer to zero, unlocks all layers, zooms extents (to force a regen), then zooms previous to leave you in the same spot as before." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Control Crosshair Size
Azfar Mahmood, a senior piping designer, shares a tip about controlling the size of the crosshairs in AutoCAD. "The CursorSize system variable, when set to 100, will show the crosshairs fully across the screen. This works fine on the standard snap style, but on isometric style the cursor size does not fit the full length of the drawing editor or your screen." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Use GATTE to Change Attributed Blocks
Michael Poggemann, a senior engineering technician, shares some advice about using AutoCAD's GATTE command to change attributed block values. "This command will change all the values of a selected attribute (tag) in a drawing." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Review Cadalyst's Tip Submission Guidelines, then Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Please remember to submit only code and other tips that are your original work (or provide the original source so we can include proper credit) and to tell us which software version you use.
By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your code in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to the code; published code is not to be used for commercial purposes.
