This Week's Software Tips
Get Rewarded for a Good Deed!
Help your fellow CAD users: Share your time-saving tips with the community! Use the "Submit Tip" button below to share your tips for using AutoCAD (or any other CAD software tool) more effectively and efficiently. If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store.
Shrink Signed PDFs
Space Management Specialist Mitch Hirschklau shares a method his company uses to reduce the file size of scanned PDF files of drawings that require a signature for submittal. "Scanning the original hard copy produces, typically, an enormous PDF (data file) footprint — so big, in fact, that we couldn't e-transmit it to the requesting office." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Clean Up Extension Lines with DimBreak
Frequent tipster Leonid Nemirovsky of the Better Than Nothing AutoLISP site sends us a tip about using the DimBreak command to clean up the extension lines of dimensions. According to tip reviewer Brian Benton, "The DimBreak command in AutoCAD ... doesn't actually break dimension lines; it makes them appear that they are broken so you can see the other objects." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Lengthen to Shorten
Steve Meyer, a senior structural draftsperson, cleverly uses the Lengthen command to shorten objects. "When laying out structural members on a 2D plan or elevation, connection joints are demonstrated by showing the incoming member ending a little short of the connection point. I like to use the Lengthen command to shorten the incoming line." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Custom Escape Button
AutoCAD Technician Michael Klinck provides us with a little macro that keeps his hands on the mouse so he can keep working. "Custom commands are meant to save time," says tip reviewer Brian Benton. "This one can do so by keeping you focused on the mouse." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
February Tips from Hot Tip Harry
Quick Tolerance Creation
Dave White has created a routine that helps him to quickly create various tolerances in his AutoCAD drawing without having to change dimension styles. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Add Polyline Vertices
AVT is a routine from Scott Botting that allows you to add vertices to existing polylines in AutoCAD. Before getting started, note that this routine only works on the older, "heavy" 2D polylines, not the current "lightweight" polylines. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Control Text Length
Isak Mishaeli has submitted a routine that enables you to stretch a text string horizontally or vertically in AutoCAD. It does this by manipulating the width factor and/or the text height of one or more text entities. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Scale Blocks by Insertion Point
Repeat contributor Theodorus Winata brings us a small routine to help with block scaling in AutoCAD. It scales all selected blocks by their insertion point. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
True Offset Ellipse
Frequent contributor Kent Cooper shares a routine that allows you to offset an ellipse where the result is also a true ellipse. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
What makes this routine from Clint Cogswell different is that it actually breaks apart a large mtext entity into smaller chunks of mtext, not single lines of text. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
