This Week's Software Tips
What's Your Secret?
Do you have any tips for using AutoCAD — or any other CAD software tool — more effectively and efficiently? Send them to us! If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Use the "Submit Tip" button below to send us your tip today!
I Wish Everything Were Flat!
Frequent tipster Danny Korem provides a method of drawing a polyline in AutoCAD by snapping to objects that have elevation, but keeping the polyline's elevation at zero. "This works, and it is very useful," said Cadalyst Tip Reviewer Brian Benton. "The macro in the new command forces your polyline to be drawn at an elevation of zero units." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Create New Layout Tab from Template
Dave Alexander shares a method for creating a new drawing from revised linework and old drawing files in AutoCAD. "Plumbing drawings usually require multiple drawings showing plumbing systems that pass vertically through a building. The location of fixtures on one floor determines the location of the piping on the floors above and below." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Use Trim to Break
Mark Furse sends us a tip about using AutoCAD's Trim command to break an object. "I've always found the Break command a bit clumsy. When using running osnaps, it will often snap back to the first break when I'm trying to specify the second." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Civil 3D Tip: Use GeographicLocation to Reset ViewCube
Todd Rogers sends us a tip on how to reset the ViewCube in AutoCAD Civil 3D. "Using a previous version of a template file (e.g., a 2011 template file opened in 2012) causes the ViewCube to become skewed a bit." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Review Cadalyst's Tip Submission Guidelines, then Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Please remember to submit only code and other tips that are your original work (or provide the original source so we can include proper credit) and to tell us which software version you use.
By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your code in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to the code; published code is not to be used for commercial purposes.
