This Week's Software Tips
Back to Tip School
After you finish packing a lunch and stocking that backpack, take a few minutes to share your tips — for AutoCAD or any other CAD software tool — with your fellow CAD users. If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use toward a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Use the "Submit Tip" button below to send us your tip today!
Create Custom Field Values to View Outside of CAD
Tipster Steven Matchett has a way to get AutoCAD file information without using CAD. "This is an interesting idea," said Cadalyst Tip Reviewer Brian Benton. "File properties can be accessed in many different ways. One way is outside of AutoCAD through Windows Explorer." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Manage 3D Models in Paper Space
Frequent tipster Leonid Nemirovsky shares a method he uses to manage 3D models and parts in AutoCAD. "When I develop 3D models, I first create parts (usually solids). Then I assemble them together, often 'unioning' them in the process. To ensure that I can make changes, I keep the parts in separate drawings, so my main model is clean. This cuts rendering time dramatically." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Transfer Annotations on Mixed Drawings
Leonid Nemirovsky also sent in a trick for dealing with AutoCAD files that are annotated in both model and paper space. "Working with other people's files can be difficult," said Cadalyst Tip Reviewer Brian Benton. "The problem isn't necessarily that they are done incorrectly; it's often that they were created with a different set of CAD standards. This difference puts them in conflict with your files." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Add Parking Spaces with a Dynamic Block
Tipster Steve Lander shares a dynamic insulation block with us that he made to help with the layout and design of parking areas in AutoCAD. "This block allows the user to add car parking spaces dynamically and has a field attached that counts the number of spaces (remember to perform a Regen to make the field update)." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Review Cadalyst's Tip Submission Guidelines, then Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Please remember to submit only code and other tips that are your original work (or provide the original source so we can include proper credit) and to tell us which software version you use.
By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your code in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to the code; published code is not to be used for commercial purposes.
