Try FreeCommander, the Free File Manager

22 Jan, 2014 By: Robert Green

This alternative to the standard Windows File Manager features a dual-panel display.

The subject of this CAD Manager's Toolbox was suggested by Wes Webber via the CAD Managers Unite! Facebook group, in response to my request for cool utilities and low-cost programs to help CAD managers do their jobs.

FreeCommander is a file management tool that uses a side-by-side display that (as Mr. Webber noted) reminds me of XTree Pro from the old DOS days. Many things that I used to be able to do with XTree — making snapshots, creating Favorites folders, running batches, etc. — I can now do again with FreeCommander.

I've really just scratched the surface of the tool's capabilities, but I already like it and am looking forward to customizing some tasks and snapshots to manage network folders, clean backups, etc.

Be cautious: There are a number of junk links that download other programs in tandem with FreeCommander, but I was able to find a direct download of the installation ZIP file here.
