Graebert Announces CAD Solution for Android Devices

10 Oct, 2014 By: Cadalyst Staff

Forthcoming 2D/3D software release provides full functionality to tablet users, says the developer.

CAD solutions developer Graebert has announced ARES Touch 2015, a CAD solution for Google Android–based mobile devices. ARES Touch 2015 is not a viewer but a complete professional CAD solution, using the same engine that powers ARES Commander on Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

Although it can run on a smartphone, the solution is designed for tablets with a screen size of 7’’ or more. Graebert expects demand for such a solution to rise with the growing number of tablet computer users. Technology research firm Gartner predicts a total of 320 million tablet sales in 2015, versus 316 million PC sales (desktops and laptops combined), with Android making up 62% of worldwide aggregate tablet sales.

The new solution features:

  • Native DWG support.
  • Support for projects of any size.
  • Project synchronization with the cloud via Dropbox, and soon Google Drive, as well as other services. Users are not limited to cloud storage from Graebert; they can choose the solution that best fits their needs.
  • A complete set of tools to review, create, and modify drawings on the go.
  • A user interface that is optimized for touch.

In addition, ARES Touch includes an open application programming interface (API) for developers to migrate their applications from desktop to mobile. According to Graebert, this means that any add-on initially created for ARES Commander or AutoCAD can now be easily migrated to mobile (because ARES Touch supports the same API set as ARES Commander, including LISP and C++ Tx [Graebert’s equivalent to ARX]). As a result, developers can maintain the same core stream of code for desktop and mobile platforms and only need to focus their development on Touch UI adaptation.

"Graebert was the first company to release a mobile CAD solution back in 2000 for Windows CE devices and we also have 15 years of mobile experience with our SiteMaster product line," said Wilfried Graebert, CEO and founder of Graebert. "While we believe users will keep using their PC for heavy CAD tasks, we see a growing demand for agility to work from multiple devices including tablets and smartphones and are very excited to introduce ARES Touch 2015 to meet that pent-up need."

Users of ARES Commander 2015 will be able to receive the ARES Touch 2015 Beta in November this year, a few months before it becomes available on the Google Play store. They will receive ARES Touch for free and vice versa, for the duration of their Graebert subscription. This means that for an initial price starting at 250€/$ per year (795€/$ for a perpetual license), Graebert customers will receive a license for their computer (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux) and also for their Android tablets and possibly smartphones (a single license of ARES Touch allows customers to use it on all Android devices).
