Spiceworks Offers Free IT Management Resources

CAD Manager's Toolbox: If your CAD management workload includes IT tasks such as network monitoring and help desk management, these tools can help.

I’ve recently started using some free IT management applications from Spiceworks, and I’ve become very impressed with the wide variety of applications they offer for network monitoring, purchasing, and help desk management, as well as their community of support. Spiceworks partners with a variety of IT and hardware solutions providers that sponsor the site, so the entire service is free to the user.

Of course, not all CAD managers wear an IT hat, but many do, and it is those CAD managers who may find Spiceworks very helpful. Spiceworks apps that can be of particular value for IT-aware CAD managers include:

  • Hardware research tools
  • Inventory management tools
  • Network monitoring tools
  • Mobile device management tools.

All the applications I’ve used so far have alerting tools that can send you alerts on your phone (a feature that’s especially useful for network monitoring).

And even if you don’t use any of the tools, the research and community interaction are great. When you join Spiceworks, you become a “Spicehead” and enter a quirky, fun environment that is somehow kitschy, trendy, and geeky all at the same time.

While I’ve just scratched the surface of what Spiceworks has to offer, I’m very impressed with the range of tools. If you do any sort of network inventorying, purchasing, or device management support, look through their offerings to see which ones you can integrate into your CAD manager toolbox.
