Big Tools for Big Jobs: Wide-Format Scanners and Printers Make Small Work of Large Projects (Cadalyst Labs Review)
31 Aug, 2008 By: Ron LaFonEven in today's digital world, not all files are fully useful in digital format, and at times must be output to paper for information sharing, markup, or portability to the field.
A significant number of original drawings, blueprints, and maps are at risk because they've never been transferred to a digital format. These paper documents represent a substantial amount of time, money, and resources — and protecting them could be vital to your organization. Scanning these wide-format originals into digital masters for long-term security is a top priority. At the same time, we face the reality that even in today's digital world, not all files are fully useful in digital format, and at times must be output to paper for information sharing, markup, or portability to the field. That's when you must call on a wide-format printer to produce paper documents at sizes far larger than a typical desktop printer can produce.

This Cadalyst Labs roundup surveys a variety of wide-format scanners and printers currently available and the factors to consider when purchasing these devices. We present here a broad array of high-quality, wide-format devices offering options that are greater than ever.
What We Requested
When we invited companies to participate in this roundup of wide-format scanners and printers, Cadalyst requested that the selected devices support at least D-size paper (24" x 36") and were released after January 2007. In the case of printer/plotters, we allowed any printing technology appropriate for CAD and GIS applications, such as ink jet, thermal, or LED. Each vendor could submit a maximum of three scanners and/or three printer/plotters. The vendors also supplied (and verified) the detailed data included in the feature tables you can find at www.cadalyst.com/0908scanner-table and www.cadalyst.com/0908printer-table.
![]() What to Look For |
Keep in mind that this article is a survey of products. I've had direct experience with various models from nearly all vendors included here and can attest to their quality and engineering in general, but I did not conduct a hands-on review of products this time around. And although this roundup certainly doesn't cover every wide-format device on the market today, we hope it offers a good overview of the features and capabilities available in the latest hardware. High-quality choices are available to meet your immediate needs and provide room for growth.

![]() Colortrac s SmartLF Cx 40 scanners feature 2 + 4 all-wheel-drive Active Paper Transport for handling delicate originals with care. |
Colortrac offers a broad range of wide-format scanners and regularly expands and updates its product line. The Colortrac SmartLF 40" scanners use deep-focus contact image sensor (CIS) technology for compact design, reduced weight, and low power consumption. All scanners in this series feature 2 + 4 all-wheel-drive Active Paper Transport (APT) for handling originals with care. APT applies a constant but minimum force, while achieving the required traction and accuracy. Access to the scan glass and pressure rollers for cleaning is quick and easy through the hinged APT.
For this article, Colortrac submitted three wide-format charge-coupled device (CCD) scanners. Colortrac uses the "m" in a model name to indicate monochrome, the "c" for color, and the "e" for express color. The three Colortrac scanners discussed here have a base scanning resolution of 600 dpi, with an interpolated resolution of 3,600 dpi and an accuracy rating of ±0.1% ±1 pixel. All three scanners also use simple and Intelligent 2D Adaptive Thresholding (IAT) methods and support JPEG, JPEG 2000, TIFF, PNG, and PDF file formats. Color models support ICC printer profiles.
SmartLF scanners feature USB 2.0 connectivity and are plug-and-play devices. SmartLF scanners can be upgraded from monochrome to color on-site, making them a good choice for users who need monochrome scanning now but might need to add color scanning down the road.
Each of the three scanners measures 54.8" wide by 6.7" high (140 cm x 17 cm) and weighs 73 lb. They work with both Windows XP and Windows Vista. Each model supports sheets as large as 44" (111.8 cm) wide and can scan an area 40" wide. Media as thick as 0.079" (2 mm) is supported. Warranty coverage is two years for return-to-base coverage and includes parts and labor. An optional stand for all models is $400.
Each Colortrac SmartLF scanner includes high-quality software. Colortrac aims to appeal to the broadest cross-section of users by combining wide-format scanning and copying in a single program with a minimal but highly effective set of operator controls and universal Windows printer compatibility.
The Colortrac SmartLF Cx 40c can scan in monochrome at 1.0 ips and in color at 0.12 ips at 600 dpi (based on 36" x 48" E-size media). The speed rating at 200 dpi (D-size portrait) is 9 ips in monochrome and 0.75 ips in color. It scans in 256 levels of gray in monochrome and 16.7 million colors for color scans and is priced at $7,995, including the software.
The Colortrac SmartLF Cx 40e scans in monochrome, grayscale, and express color (fast) modes. Its speed rating at 200 dpi (D-size portrait) is 9 ips in monochrome and 0.49 ips in color, four times as fast in color as the Cx 40c. It is priced at $8,995, including software.
The SmartLF Cx 40m, a monochrome and grayscale scanner, can scan in 600-dpi monochrome mode at 1.0 ips (based on E-size media). At 200 dpi, this model can scan a D-sized portrait sheet in 4 seconds at 8-bit color depth. It is priced at $6,495, including the software.
