21" Monitors Reviewed

PanaSync/Pro P1101
Panasonic
Star rating: 4 stars out of 5

The Panasonic PanaSync/Pro P110I is a 21" monitor with a viewable area of 20". It's based on an Invar shadow-mask CRT with a dot pitch of 0.25mm (0.217mm horizontal and 0.132mm vertical). At 59.4lb, this is one of the lightest monitors we reviewed in this roundup. Warranty coverage is a standard three years, with one year on-site coverage.

The Pro P110I monitor has a horizontal sync range of 30–117KHz and a vertical sync range of 50–160Hz. It can produce displays of up to 1800X1440 at 71Hz, has one factory preset and seven reserved modes, and offers 13 user memory settings. As shipped, the PanaSync Pro P110I includes both BNC and standard mini D-sub connectors, with a USB hub available as an extra-cost option. The ESP is a low $1,099.

Unfortunately, the Pro P110I did not perform particularly well on the CADALYST test bench. It produced an excellent score of 5 in the contrast and geometric distortion components and 4.5 in brightness. Scores were lower for focus, raster rotation, and color purity. In addition to obvious ghosting that was visible in adjacent black and white panels on screen, color purity suffered from unevenness, reds were significantly misplaced toward orange, and greens didn't separate. I couldn't remedy these problems with the available adjustments or degaussing.

Buttons at the lower front center of the Pro P110I's bezel control left and right adjustments via the on-screen menu, brightness, contrast, and power. A full range of controls is available via the menu, including such extras as menu position, self test, and language (English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish). The swivel base tilts up 13, down 3, and left and right 90°. — R.L.
