Xref Tips for AutoCAD, Part 2
Thanks to all who answered the call for xref tips. We received a lot of great tips — so many that we had to run the first batch in the previous edition of Tips & Tools Weekly.
Rename Layers from Bound Xrefs
R.T. Rinehart often needs to change the names of several layers in a drawing. He has developed a process using the Rename command when the names have similar beginnings. "When an xref is attached to a drawing, AutoCAD delineates its layers in the Layer Manager by placing the reference name followed by a vertical bar, followed by the layer name (i.e. floorplan|steel, or floorplan|concrete)." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Control Visual Properties of Xrefs
Chris Micallef reminds us about VISRETAIN, a system variable in AutoCAD that controls the properties of layers in a file. "Changes to the color, linetype, properties, etc. of layers belonging to xrefs can be made permanent or temporary. The VISRETAIN system variable can be set to 0." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Unload an Xref
Tip Patrol member Billy Wooten sends us a LISP routine he created that unloads an xref by picking on it. "If it isn't an xref (i.e. a Block or an Entity), it identifies it and instructs the user to try again." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Use AutoCAD Reference Manager to Control Multiple Xrefs
Mike Shilton needs to restore the links to referenced files in many files at one time. He uses the Reference Manager program. "When servers are updated and drive letters change, you often need to reset the folder paths to your externally referenced files. Using relative paths can help, providing all externally referenced files in the same folder or subfolders of the current drawing file." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Repath Broken Xrefs with Redirmode
Josh Jones (the Lazy Drafter) shares a tip from his blog about using the Express Tool Redirmode. "It's happened to all of us. You receive a zipped set of CAD files, you open a layout drawing that contains xrefs, and all the xref paths are broken. Never fear, there is a lazy way to redirect all the xref paths in a drawing. Here is how I make it happen." Read more
