This Week's Software Tips
Set Every System Variable to Your Liking
Jesse Moore sends us a solution for resetting AutoCAD's system variables the way you want them, every time. "Have you ever opened a drawing to find that your custom settings are discombobulated? It could be anything under the sun that changed; in my case, it often alters the way I have AutoCAD set up to select objects. You can go into your options and fix it, but the problem really resides in your system variables." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Edit 3D Blocks Using Ncopy and Refedit
Peter Hill shows us a method to edit blocks in place and copy outside objects to (and from) them. "Refedit and Ncopy are two commands that become an extremely powerful 3D block-editing tool when used together. Have you ever been annoyed by the fact that you can't manipulate the UCS inside Block Editor? Have you tried to modify a solid inside a block and ended up exploding it and redefining it out of frustration when you couldn't align the UCS to one of its faces? There is a solution." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
AutoCAD's Revert Command: An Update
Karl Hill gives us a quick reminder of a command that's been around awhile, but appears to be missing from the ribbons in AutoCAD 2010. "The Revert command, which I use quite often, can still be launched by typing Revert at the command prompt. This command closes your drawing and reopens it at the point of the last Save." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Create a 'Half Offset' Macro
Ed Galicki sends us a macro for the Offset command that will offset an object half of the entered distance. "This macro is similar to the tip about using CAL in commands. I still use a tablet, but a toolbar item could also do the same thing. I have a box on my menu titled Half Offset." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Finding Unknown AutoCAD Commands
Roger Carter sends us a tip for finding useful AutoCAD commands that you might not be aware of. "While customizing toolbars, I have come across some really good commands. The latest one that I found under Customize User Interface>Command List>All Commands is called Paste as Block (Ctrl+Shift+V)." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
