This Week's Software Tips
The Countdown to Tip-mas
'Tis the season for sharing. Do you have any tips for using AutoCAD — or any other CAD software tool — more effectively and efficiently? Put them in Cadalyst's stocking! If we publish your tip, you'll earn a gift card you can use to purchase a T-shirt or other prizes in the Cadalyst Store. Use the "Submit Tip" button below to send us your tip today!
Open Sheet Sets without AutoCAD
Frequent tipster Leonid Nemirovsky has a quick AutoCAD tip to share with us. According to tip reviewer Brian Benton, "Windows can open files that have programs associated with their file extensions. If you are in Windows Explorer, double-click a file and the proper program will open that file." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Move, Copy, Rotate, and Scale with One Command
Chief Draftsman Wade D. Spruill shows us a command that can execute four other AutoCAD commands on an object. "There is a 'hidden' command in AutoCAD that a lot of users, young and old alike, do not know about." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Shift to Reverse
Kent Elrod sent us a tip on using the Shift key to cycle through selections and input types in a reverse order. "I really like the ability to type the first few letters of a command and press Tab to scroll through all the commands that start with that key sequence. Even better is the ability to move backward alphabetically." View the follow-up comments and photos.
SolidWorks Site Encourages Designers to Share Their Stories
SolidWorks has launched a web site called "The Drive to Design" that revolves around a video showing some of the steps that led a fictional engineer to his vocation. Visitors are invited to share their own stories, download the files for one of the projects shown in the video and explain how they would make it better, or submit ideas for their own design dreams.
