This Week's Software Tips
Summertime Is Tip Time!
Do you know a better way to work — in AutoCAD or any other CAD software tool? Take a few minutes to share your tips with your fellow CAD users, and benefit yourself at the same time: If we publish your tip, you can earn an Amazon gift card and be entered in the quarterly prize drawing. Use Groups to Select Many Elements at Once
Joey Price shares this AutoCAD tip for grouping several objects together. "In my office we use multiple symbols and tables in our notes. For a long time I struggled with selecting all of the symbols when I needed to move the notes." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Get More Screen Real Estate with a Dual Monitor Setup
Levi Connolly noticed that most of his coworkers were using only one of their dual monitors for AutoCAD. "One trip to my desk to show them how I use both monitors for AutoCAD changed this." View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Vault Tip: Shortcut for Checking In Files in Vault
David Gaskill offers this tip for Autodesk Vault users. "Have you ever wondered what files you may have checked out? It's a great idea to check in all files at the end of the day, or at least the end of the week." View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Label Entity with Break
Kent Cooper used Cadalyst CAD Tip No. 4212, "Add Text to Piping Drawings" by Theresa Lowe, as inspiration for this routine. Kent's tip allows you to insert a text string "into" an entity; the entity is broken and the text string is placed into the break. The gap in the entity is sized to accommodate the text string, taking into account the text properties that can change the size of the gap needed. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Label Entity with Mask
This routine is an alternate to "Label Entity with Break," also from Kent Cooper. That tip inserts a text string into an entity by physically breaking the entity. This routine, in contrast, uses a wipeout to mask the entity instead of breaking it. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Reload Xref Layer Properties
Reference drawing layers can be modified in the parent drawing and changes to color, linetype, and other properties are maintained as long as the system variable Visretain is set to 1. This routine from Benzigar Peter allows you to reload an xref while restoring the original layer properties, and not have to worry about the Visretain settings. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Scale Multiple Objects in Place
Kent Cooper ran across a request in the Autodesk user forums for a routine that will scale drawing objects individually, in place. The built-in Scale command in AutoCAD will scale multiple objects, but they are all scaled together about a single reference point. Kent's solution is to scale each object using the center of the object's bounding box as the scale point. View the complete tip and post your feedback.
Review Cadalyst's Tip Submission Guidelines, then Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. Be sure to tell us which software version you use. If we publish your original, previously unpublished tip, you can earn a gift card (learn more about prizes here). Please submit only tips or code that are your original work. By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your tip in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to submitted tips.
By submitting code, you agree that your code can be reused as-is or modified by other users in conjunction with AutoCAD or other software programs to gain efficiencies in that software for professional or personal use, and that your code can be shared freely among users. Users do not have the right to republish code in any manner or format (such as on a blog web site or in a printed document) for personal or commercial gain without written permission from Cadalyst and the original author.
