March Tips from Hot Tip Harry

Hot Tip Harry, Cadalyst's mysterious purveyor of customized AutoCAD code, has dispatched another bundle of great LISP tips from readers. View and download each of the latest tips using the links below, or get the entire March 2015 Hot Tip Harry batch at once.

Convert 3D Faces To Polylines
CAD Tip No. 4402, from Kent Cooper, converts 3D faces to lines in AutoCAD. This routine is similar, except it converts 3D faces to 3D polylines. All edges, regardless of their visibility status in the 3D face, will be created using this routine. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Find XCliped Xrefs
Kent Cooper, as he frequently does, responds to a request in the Autodesk forums with a custom-made routine that he shares with us. This one finds any xrefs in the current space that have been clipped with the XClip command, and draws a heavy red polyline around the clipping boundary of each for easy visual identification. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Orient Lines to Slope in the Same Direction
Kent Cooper shares another LISP routine he created for someone in the Autodesk forums. This routine is useful if you create lines in AutoCAD with different z elevations on each end and you use directional linetypes, such as a linetype with an arrow. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Layer Color, Lineweight, and Plot Style Utilities
Frequent contributor Michael Partenheimer notes that the National CAD Standard (NCS) no longer associates a color to a plot thickness. He has submitted three separate but related LISP routines to help AutoCAD users with this transition. Users can set the lineweight of each layer based on the layer color or layer plot styles, or set layer colors based on the lineweight of that layer. View the complete tip and post your feedback.

Submit Your Tip

Review Cadalyst's Tip Submission Guidelines, then Submit Your Tip for your favorite CAD software. Be sure to tell us which software version you use. If we publish your original, previously unpublished tip, you can earn a gift card (learn more about prizes here). Please submit only tips or code that are your original work. By submitting code, you grant Cadalyst the right to print and distribute your tip in print, digitally, and by other means. Cadalyst and individual authors retain all rights to submitted tips.

By submitting code, you agree that your code can be reused as-is or modified by other users in conjunction with AutoCAD or other software programs to gain efficiencies in that software for professional or personal use, and that your code can be shared freely among users. Users do not have the right to republish code in any manner or format (such as on a blog web site or in a printed document) for personal or commercial gain without written permission from Cadalyst and the original author.
