Discovery Channel Introduces Prototype This

16 Oct, 2008

New show uses SolidWorks to create futuristic inventions.

Dassault Systemes announced recently that a new television series on the Discovery Channel, Prototype This, is using SolidWorks to create its inventions. The series lets viewers experience the design process firsthand as a team of engineers and PhDs bring inventions to life.

The show premiered October 15th with an attempt to prototype a mind-control car.

From finding solutions to today's problems, to conceiving new machines, the crew reportedly imagines, and then invents the future by using emerging technologies.

"Any great prototype starts with a great design, and to design I use my favorite tool, SolidWorks," said Mike North, the team's materials and mechanical engineering expert. "It takes a lot of headache out of the design process."

Companies that provided products and services for the series include:

  • GibbsCAM Software
  • Granta Design
  • SolidWorks
  • T-Tech
  • Tormach
  • Universal Laser Systems
  • Z Corporation
"It's exciting to see the fun and cool aspects of engineering revealed for the world to experience," said Fielder Hiss, director and product manager of Dassault Systemes. "We're thrilled that the Prototype This team chose SolidWorks, and we can't wait to see what they come up with."

The show airs Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. Upcoming episodes include: boxing robots, a traffic-busting truck, and waterslide simulator.
