Show Report: SIGGRAPH 2005

Lots of entertainment and gaming technologies,
but some CAD, too

Early this month, I attended SIGGRAPH 2005 in Los Angeles, along with more than 29,000 other attendees. SIGGRAPH is devoted to computer graphics and interactive techniques, primarily for the entertainment and game-development communities, but you’ll also find some representation of scientific and industrial applications, including CAD.

A clear indication of the conference’s target audience was its keynote speaker: George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies, among many others. I arrived too late to see his presentation, but heard it was great. Read more >>

Cadalyst Labs Review: Solid Edge v17

Like its competitors, Solid Edge v17 creates parts, assemblies and drawings, but unlike them, it captures design intent through a unique combination of inference logic and decision-management concepts called STREAM technology. Introduced in the initial release, STREAM continues to be a productivity enhancer in the way it reduces the number of steps required to perform certain kinds of tasks, such as constraining profiles with dimensions that can be directly edited in sketch mode. Design Profit Summit: September 20-21, 2005, Troy Marriott Hotel, Troy, Michigan. Organized by Munro & Associates, the event will include presenters discussing some of the most successful products from the automotive, aerospace, recreational vehicle, homeland security and medical products industries, focusing on issues critical to making higher profits. An interactive format is designed to help product executives learn from industry leaders who will share the methods that made them successful.

Moldflow User Group: October 25-27, 2005, Wyndham Orlando Resort, Orlando, Florida. International conference hosted by Moldflow, provider of automation and optimization software solutions for the plastics injection molding industry, will feature two tracks of peer-reviewed presentations by members of the Moldflow user community, technology presentations by Moldflow representatives, and numerous training opportunities.
